Activity Level

Moderate – High Activity
Most of the tour is at a fairly relaxed pace, however, special note needs to be taken on the treks.

Rhino Trekking: Be prepared to walk at least two hours through uneven terrain. Most of the walking is on flat land and at a relaxed pace. We may have to go off paths and walk through shrub and low bush.

Chimp Trekking: Chimp Trekking will average about 3 hours. It is through the forest and expect to go off the paths and encounter rough and uneven terrain. The area is fairly flat. You will walk at a moderate-to-quick pace.

Gorilla Trekking: Expect a difficult trek. Your trek can take from 4 to 6 hours (or more in extreme circumstances). You will be on uneven terrain and often off-path. The trek will be uphill and downhill as the gorillas live in the mountains. Porters are available for assistance and are very highly recommended.

Golden Monkey Trekking: This trek will also average about 3 hours. The Golden Monkeys live in the bamboo at the base of the volcano, so there is not a lot of elevation, but be prepared to go off the trail and have uneven terrain.

Important note: Human diseases can be passed on to primates. In extreme circumstances, if you are sick, you may not be able to participate in chimpanzee trekking, gorilla trekking, or golden monkey trekking.

Volcanoes National Park Gorilla Trek

We offer the opportunity to do a second gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda.  Located in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda, it offers a thrilling and immersive wildlife experience. As you embark on this adventure, guided by experienced trackers and park rangers, you’ll journey through lush rainforests and volcanic terrain in search of majestic mountain gorillas. The park is home to several habituated gorilla families, and encountering these incredible primates in their natural habitat is a truly awe-inspiring moment. The trek itself can vary in duration and difficulty, but the reward of observing gorillas up close, witnessing their social interactions and behavior, makes every step worthwhile. Volcanoes National Park’s commitment to gorilla conservation and sustainable tourism ensures a memorable and impactful experience while contributing to the protection of these endangered species and their fragile ecosystem.
This second gorilla trek would be in addition to the included gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.  The cost is $1500 USD.
