Here, we will be captivated by the historical significance and beauty of the Troyan Monastery, a true gem of Bulgarian history. Founded in the 16th century, the monastery’s architecture, intricate wood-carvings, and awe-inspiring frescoes in the church leave a lasting impression. A particularly cherished treasure within the monastery is the miraculous icon of the three-handed Holy Virgin.

Our next stop takes us to the Vinprom Troyan distillery, a historical successor to the traditional rakia-production practices in the Troyan area. With roots tracing back to 1948 as a section of the State Spirit Monopoly, the distillery now stands as a national leader in crafting natural distilled beverages and spirits. The imposing hill Tsarevets beckons us to explore the remnants of the ancient fortress, a testament to the city’s former status as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Wander along “The Street of Crafts,” where we’ll encounter skilled artisans showcasing their traditional craftsmanship.

To elevate our senses, we culminate our city tour with a delightful wine-tasting experience at a cozy wine-bar. Here, we’ll have the pleasure of discovering the finest local wineries of Central Northern Bulgaria, indulging in the region’s best vintages in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we continue our scenic drive, basking in the ambiance of the magnificent Balkan Mountain. The pass leads us to the striking Shipka Memorial complex, where the gleaming gilt domes of the church brighten the forestry scenery. We have a short stop-by and will have the chance to see the church both inside and outside and admire the colorful architecture before resuming our journey.

Our next destination brings us to the region of Kazanlak, famous for the emblematic Valley of Roses. Here, we’ll have the privilege of visiting the replica of the Kazanlak Thracian Tomb, a UNESCO-listed site dating back to the 4th century BC. The tomb’s hemispherical chamber is adorned with intricate drawings depicting intriguing scenes from the noble Thracians’ lives, offering a glimpse into their ancient civilization. This remarkable historical site leaves us with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the rich heritage of the region.

Before noon, we venture to Sasha’s Secret Garden, located in the picturesque mountain village of Tazha. The favorable climate here is perfect for Sasha’s cherished hobby – plants and gardening. In her private botanical garden, she has lovingly curated over 500 plant species, making this haven a true paradise for collectors and enthusiasts alike. The garden becomes an enchanting space for spiritual and artistic experiences, where we can revel in the feast of colors, shapes, harmony, and vitality that only Nature can provide. Sasha herself will be our guide, sharing captivating stories about the specific nature and cultivation techniques of various plant species, offering us a personal glimpse into her life’s journey.

As the afternoon approaches, we head further south to the “Valley of the Thracian Kings,” a name derived from the abundance of historical tombs and ancient Thracian remains in the area. To gain a glimpse of the lifestyle of this ancient tribe, we’ll partake in some of the Thracians’ favored activities – uncovering treasures and indulging in wine.

In the village of Starosel, we visit a renowned winery, where we’ll enjoy a short tour of the technological halls. The highlight of the visit awaits in a magical setting as we experience a wine-tasting within a hall designed to replicate a Thracian ritual temple. Historical evidence has firmly established that as early as the 6th to 5th centuries BC, the Thracians were already producing and relishing wine.

Our journey then takes us to Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second-largest city, where we’ll settle for two nights, ready to explore and revel in the rich culture and history that awaits us.

Our morning begins with a city tour, featuring a visit to a remarkable historical site – The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis, a predecessor of present-day Plovdiv. This impressive Early Christian temple stands as the largest of its kind in the country. Within its walls, we’ll be mesmerized by the preserved Roman mosaic heritage, showcasing its awe-inspiring richness and magnificence. A true masterpiece of late antiquity art, it continues to inspire generations to this day.

Around noon, we take a relaxing break to indulge in a unique tasting experience. In the town’s art zone, we’ll sample local craft beers born from the collaboration between a seasoned German brewer and young Bulgarian entrepreneurs, taking advantage of the region’s clear Rhodopi waters and high-quality ingredients. The tasting will be accompanied by a selection of appetizers, creating a delightful light lunch.

Next, we venture to another location in Plovdiv for a visit to a local family-owned chocolate candy shop for a presentation and sampling of their delicious treats.

During our stay in Plovdiv, we may have an exciting opportunity for a fascinating encounter – a tasting of bio bee honey. We’ll learn about the story of a Bulgarian who studied abroad and his wife from the US, both of whom chose to follow their hearts and relocate to Bulgaria to continue their family tradition, passion, and legacy in producing the world’s finest honey. This heartwarming tale of dedication and craftsmanship will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on us.

Our first stop is the village of Kostandovo, where we have the privilege of meeting talented women who work at a thriving carpet factory. This factory provides employment for numerous women in the area, and they produce hand-made carpets of exceptional quality using organic materials and dyes. Their craftsmanship is truly remarkable, and it is no wonder that their clients include distinguished names such as the British Royal Family, Tony Blair, the “Albert” Museum in Vienna, Dutch Queen Beatrix, Mick Jagger, and many others.

Next, we embark on a romantic adventure aboard the Rhodopi narrow-gauge railway. This scenic ride treats us to awe-inspiring mountain views, as we pass through tunnels, curves, and valleys, including the highest railway station on the Balkan Peninsula – Avramovo, situated at an impressive 1267 meters above sea level.

Continuing our journey to Bansko, we’ll switch to a bus for the remaining ride. Along the way, we have a delightful treat in store – a visit to the village of Gorno Draglishte, where warm hospitality awaits us in a family home. Here, we’ll enjoy a cooking class on traditional Bulgarian meals, preparing our very own Bulgarian-style dinner. As we savor our delicious creation, we’ll engage in a friendly chat with the local village ladies, who will also enchant us with their beautiful songs.

Our overnight stay is in Bansko, the renowned winter resort that rests at the foot of three majestic mountains – Rila, Pirin, and the Rhodopes. Nestled in cozy comfort, we are perfectly positioned to enjoy the natural wonders and warm hospitality that this region has to offer.
