Weather

Romania has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. The average temperature range in Romania in November is between 35° and 50°F (2° and 10°C), so you'll need to bring a warm jacket. Temperatures tend to be colder in western, northern and central Romania and of course in the mountains too.

Currency

The official currency in Romania is the Leu (RON). Banknotes come in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 leu. Coins come in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 50 bani pieces. 1 leu = 100 bani.

Foreign currencies may be exchanged at banks or authorized exchange offices (called: "casa de schimb" or "birou de schimb valutar"). International airports and larger hotels also offer currency exchange services.

ATM machines can be found at main banks, airports and shopping centres. However, ATMs may be difficult to find in remote areas or villages. ATMs marked with symbols for international networks such as STAR and PLUS will accept US and Canadian bank cards.

Major credit cards including American Express, Mastercard and Visa are accepted in large hotels, car rental companies and stores in the main cities. However, credit cards may be accepted in very few places in small towns or away from tourist areas.

Electric Outlets

In Romania there are two associated plug types, types C and F. Type C plugs have two round pins and type F plugs have two round pins with two earth clips on the side. Romania operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

A universal all-in-one travel adapter (can be purchased from retailers like Amazon) will allow you to plug in and charge most electronic devices. Most electronic devices have built-in converters. However, if you plan to use North American appliances like hair dryers, flat irons or curling irons you will need a converter.
