Uganda & Rwanda Gorilla Trek & Safari
Day 1 - Entebbe

Welcome to Uganda!
Upon arrival at the airport today you will be met by a local guide and transfer to your hotel.
The adventure begins tonight. We will have a quick welcome meeting before dinner, after introductions, your tour leader will review the details of your tour. Then we will enjoy our first dinner together and get better acquainted.

Day 2 - Jinja

This morning we will depart Entebbe for Jinja. Famous as the historic source of the Nile River, Jinja is now the adrenaline capital of East Africa, with many activities available. Once in Jinja we will settle into our fabulous lodge on a private island overlooking the Nile. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or take part in one of the many optional activities.

Day 3 - Jinja

Get ready for some excitement! Today we set out on an ATV Safari, through the farms, forest and small villages along the banks of the River Nile. This in a excellent way to get acquainted with the landscape and people of Uganda. You don't need to know how to ride an ATV, they are semi automatic, very easy to ride and we will have a lesson before we set out.
After dinner this evening we will relax on a beautiful sunset cruise on the Nile. Nothing beats an African sunset and particularly one over the Nile.

Day 4 - Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

After breakfast we depart for the Ziwa Rhina Sanctuary, sit back and relax as we make our way through the East Ugandan countryside.
Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch located in Nakasongola district is the proud home of the only wild rhinos in Uganda. Presently the sanctuary is home to twenty two (22) southern white rhinos. Accommodations - Amuka Lodge

 

Day 5 - Rhino Trekking

Enter the territory of the southern white rhinos on foot. Well-trained rangers will guide you through the bush to where the rhinos are on the day of your visit. You will get the opportunity to watch these endangered, magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. As these rhinos are free to move around on 7 000 hectares of land, it is often necessary to drive to the areas where the rhinos are, before taking the bush trek.
This afternoon you are free to relax at the lodge or take part in one of the optional activities offered.

Day 6 - Kibale

After breakfast we will set out for Kibale. We will have stops including lunch along the way. The highway system in Uganda is very limited and it is possible to have incidents come up that will delay us along the way.
Kibale national park just outside Fort Portal is made up of dense tropical rainforest, within which dwell enormous numbers of primates. Our lodge is located deep in the forest and right next door to the starting point for the Chimp trekking. Accommodations - Primate Safari Lodge

 

Day 7 - Chimpanzee Trekking

Wake up for breakfast and set off for chimp tracking in the jungle rainforest. Sit quietly and listen to the great chimps cracking and the soft sweet sounds of the birds being heard in the air, this will take about 2-5hours. Besides the chimps, other primates like; Grey Vervet monkeys, Red tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkey, Blue monkeys, Red colobus monkeys, Black and white monkeys, Mangabay monkeys, Olive baboons, Potto and many others may also be seen.

Day 8 - Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast, drive from Kibale NP to Queen Elizabeth NP. The park boosts the highest biodiversity rating of any game park in the world with its dense swamps, incredible crater lakes, open savannah and rainforests. On your way you will enjoy great scenery of hills, forests and Tea plantations.

Day 9 - Queen Elizabeth National Park

An early cup of coffee to warm up the body for the morning game drive, we shall observe a number of early risers like leopards, hyenas, lions, the Uganda kobs, antelopes, Waterbucks, Warthogs, African giant elephants, herds of Buffaloes and many more will be seen plus birds like; Wood billed, Red collared, Green crombs, Yellow billed, Grey treated starting, purple indigo, Lender bill quelas, masked weaver, Grosbeak weaver, Copper sunbird among others.lio After the game drive, go back to the lodge for breakfast and rest along the pool as lunch comes.
After lunch go for a stress free Launch cruise, so interesting on the Kazinga channel, buffalos, hippos, crocodiles will be seen around the edge of the channel as they cool off and birds like, the water bucks, noisy hornbills, the two species of pitas, African grey parrots, rare shoebill, Egyptian geese, yellow billed stork, white pelicans and many others.

Day 10 - Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Very early in the morning after breakfast, you will set off for Bwindi impenetrable forest National Park via Isasha Sector with a possibility of see tree climbing lions. On your way you will enjoy scenery views of different mountains and beautiful plantations. Arrive at Buhoma in Bwindi. Check in at the hotel and relax preparing for your gorilla trek the following day.

Day 11 - Gorilla Trekking

Early morning after breakfast, you will go for gorilla tracking but before tracking, you will be briefed by the Ranger at 7:30 am and at 8:30am with packed lunch, you will start to track Nkuringo family group Mountain Gorillas. And when you find, walkyou shall spend almost an hour enjoying them and observing the kind of life they live, this will be a great achievement since these great giants are unpredictable. This walk will take around 4 - 6 hours depending on which group you are tracking and where you will meet the gorillas. After tracking return to the hotel and relax.

Day 12 - Batwa Culture Trail - Rwanda

Wake up to a leisurely breakfast and prepare for yet another adventure around the park as you visit these indigenous natives the Batwa. The Batwa are Uganda’s marginalized people and are viewed with derision by most of the Ugandan Nationals. The Batwa have lived their lives to current generations by hunting and gathering in the forest. The visit to the Batwa invariably involves songs and a dance demonstration, and once the music begins goryou can’t help but notice that they project a genuine pride in themselves.
Then it is time to say good-bye to beautiful Uganda as we cross the border into Rwanda. Expect amazing scenery along the way, nowhere are the mountains more majestic than the Virunga volcanoes.

Day 13 - Golden Monkey Trekking

The endangered Golden monkeys in Rwanda live in the bamboo vegetation towards the base of the volcanoes and habituation has helped them to overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit by researchers and tourists. After early morning breakfast, drive to the starting point at the park headquarters where you will have a briefing and after start off the Golden Monkey trekking adventure in Parc National des Volcanoes.
or have the opportunity to do a second gorilla trek (an additional cost applies for the permit $1500 USD, must be arranged at time of booking to secure the permit). The Gorilla Trekking departs from the same place as the Golden Monkey Trekking.

Day 14 - Karisoke Research Center - Kigali

This morning we have a guided tour of the Karisoke Research Center. The Karisoke Research Center today is a program of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, with more than 100 expert gorilla trackers protecting about half of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas every day. It is also the world’s centerpiece for gorilla conservation and science, with more than 300 scientific publications based on data collected at Karisoke and one of the largest databases on any wild animal, as well as education and community programs that reach tens of thousands of people in the region each year.
Then we will depart for Kigali. Once in Kigali we will check into our hotel and you will have some free time.

Day 15 - Kigali - Depart

This morning we will visit the Rwanda Genocide Museum. This may be a difficult and emotional visit but it is important in the history of Rwanda. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Time to say good-bye to this beautiful destination and fabulous friends you have made along the way. We will transfer to the the International airport this afternoon.

Please do not book flights until after March 15, 2020 unless instructed to do so by the Women's Travel Club. If not enough ladies are booked by the release date then this tour may be cancelled. If the Women's Travel Club cancels the tour all payments made will be refunded.

 

Activity Level

Moderate - High Activity
Most of the tour is at a fairly relaxed pace, however, special note needs to be taken on the treks
Rhino Trekking - Be prepared to walk at least two hours through uneven terrain. Most of the walking is on flat land and at a relaxed pace. We may have to go off paths and walk through shrub and low bush.
Chimp Trekking - Chimp Trekking will average about 3 hours. It is through the forest and expect to go off the paths and encounter rough and uneven terrain. The area is fairly flat. You will walk at a moderate to quick pace.
Gorilla Trekking - Expect a difficult trek. Your trek can take from 4 to 6 hours (or more in extreme circumstances). You will be on uneven terrain and often off of paths. The trek will be uphill and downhill as the gorillas live in the mountains. Porters are available for assistance and are very much recommended.
Golden Monkey Trekking - This trek will also average about 3 hours. The Golden Monkeys live in the bamboo at the base of the volcano so not a lot of elevation but be prepare to go off the trail and have uneven terrain.

 

Important Note

Human diseases can be passed to primates. In extreme circumstances, if you are sick you may not be able to participate in the Chimp Trekking, Gorilla Trekking or Golden Monkey Trekking.
