Day 1 - Arrive Moscow

Welcome to Russia!
Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your overnight hotel in Moscow. Time to settle in before a fabulous "Moscow by Night" city lights tour seeing some of the most iconic building lit in all their glory. After you have time to stroll through the famous Red Square with your guide and will experience the splendour of Moscow’s unique metro stations, as much art museums as public transport.

Day 2 - Moscow - Embarkation

Today a city tour covering the most famous Moscow sights including the imposing Kremlin complex and one of its magnificent cathedrals dating back to the time of the Tsars. In the evening you will be transferred to your train for the first section of your epic rail journey overnight to Kazan.

Day 3 - Kazan

After breakfast in the dining car we arrive in Kazan, capital of Tatarstan province on the banks of the mighty Volga River. The city is full of history and the tour here will bring to life the once turbulent relationship between Tartars, Cossacks, and Russians. Return to your train for dinner and the overnight journey on to Ekaterinburg.

Day 4 - Ekaterinburg

Morning on the train before an afternoon arrival in Ekaterinburg. Much of this prosperous city was renovated in 2009 and our tour will visit the newly built Cathedral-on-the-blood, built in memorial to the tragic historical event of the murder of the Tsars and his family. On departing Ekaterinburg we leave Europe and enter Asia and the vast area of Western Siberia.

Day 5 - Novosibirsk

Today we reach the city of Novosibirsk in the heart of Siberia where you will be welcomed in the traditional Russian manner with bread and salt. We visit a monument to the Trans-Siberian and see the mighty Ob River. After dinner the train continues its journey eastwards into remote lands.

Day 6 - Train across Siberia

A full day on the train through Siberia and crossing the vast Yenisey River that flows up into the arctic. The landscape is of pristine rivers, endless birch and pine forest and distant mountains. On the train there will be lectures about this fascinating and remote land. There will also be a special meal today we call the "Tsar’s Feast" and enjoy Russian hospitality with vodka and caviar tasting.

Day 7 - Irkutsk

Today we reach the city of Irkutsk, once described as the “Paris of Siberia” and you will see evidence of that on our city tour seeing some of the beautiful wooden architecture and impressive river front’s statue of Alexander III. We also visit the lively market. After lunch the tour continues with a visit to the open-air museum "Life and Work in the Time of the Tsars”. Tonight is spent in a centrally located hotel in Irkutsk.

Day 8 - Lake Baikal

Today a tour by bus out of Irkutsk to a Siberian village on the shore of Lake Baikal. We will take a boat ride from here to Port Baikal where your train awaits. From here we travel the old route of the Trans-Siberian along the shores of Baikal for several hours with a couple of stops to take photos. Dinner is served in typical local style as a picnic on the shores of the lake (weather permitting).

Day 9 - Ulan Ude

We continue by train today along the shores of Baikal and though the Selenga valley into the beautiful and wild Eastern Siberia. On the way we stop at Ulan Ude, capital of Buryatia and a city where Western and Eastern cultures meet. Continue on by train to the Mongolian border.

Day 10 - Mongolia

During the night we cross the border arriving this morning in Mongolia’s capital of Ulaanbaatar. We visit the impressive Buddhist monastery of Gandan and the Lama Museum. Optional Mongolia folk concert (tickets to be bought and paid for locally) before spending the night in a centrally located hotel. *If you prefer we can book in advance to stay in a traditional Mongolian ger (must be booked in advance and please contact us for details).

Day 11 - Mongolia

Today we visit the open steppe, mountains and grasslands outside of Ulaanbaatar. We visit a typical ger camp, home to the nomadic herdsmen that are still very much part of Mongolian culture. The herdsmen will give a display of their horseback skills. Return to your train in the evening for the journey onward to the Chinese border.

Day 12 - Gobi Desert

Travel though the Gobi Desert before reaching the Chinese border late morning.
*IMPORTANT* At the border you will need to change trains as the Chinese have a different track gauge to Russia and Mongolia and will not admit the Russian carriages. Note that the Chinese train has no Nostalgic Comfort and Bolshoi cabins - only two or 4 bed cabins. Single occupancy is not guaranteed. You will reach China’s capital Beijing in about 16 hours.

Day 13 - Bejing

The journey though China this morning gives a unique insight into the rural life of China before your arrival in Beijing where you spend the next three nights in a comfortable hotel. Free time for the rest of the day and own arrangements for dinner.

Day 14 - Bejing

Today you will see some of the highlights of Beijing including the Temple of Heaven and its beautiful park full of local Beijingers as well as Tiananmen Square and the extraordinary former home of the Emperors of China, the Forbidden City. Own dinner arrangements in the evening.

Day 15 - The Great Wall

Today we head out of the city to the mountains that contain the Great Wall. We also visit the Ming Tombs and the avenue of the spirits. Return to the city for the quintessential evening meal of Peking Duck!

Day 16 - Bejing - Depart

Time to say good-bye to this amazing area and fabulous friends you have made along the way. Sadly, today marks the end of a trip filled with unique and unforgettable experiences. You will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey home.

Tsar's Gold Train - Category II Classic Cabin

Category II Classic has two adjacent berths (Classic 187 x 68cm). Classic cabins have a table, luggage storage above the door, centrally controlled air conditioning and shared toilet facilities at the end of each carriage. Clients also have access to shower facilities elsewhere on the train.

Tsar's Gold Train - Category III Nostalgic Comfort

This popular category consists of compartments with modern facilities yet beautifully decorated to give the feeling of a bygone era of luxury rail travel. Compartments are 43 square feet / 4 meters squared. There are two berths, one upper and one lower (both 185 x 80 cm), with the upper berth able to be fold up when not in use. Your compartment shares a basic shower and basin with an adjacent compartment. Shared toilets are located at both ends of the carriage. In addition each cabin has their own air-conditioning controls, luggage storage under the bed and a small armchair.

Tsar's Gold Train - Category IV Bolshoi

These luxury cabins have 2 berths, one upper 174 x 80 cm and one lower 184 x 110 cm and are 60 square feet / 5.57 square meters with an ensuite bathroom containing a toilet, basin and integrated shower with a curtain. Each Bolshoi class carriage has 6 of these cabins and clients dine in their own dining car (shared with Bolshoi Platinum cabin members) with a choice of 2 main courses during lunch and dinner. In addition, each cabin has remote controlled air conditioning, small wardrobes for storage, DVD / CD player and a small couch. There are a limited number of these cabins so booking as early as possible is advised.
