Day 1
Women's Travel Club Nordic North Tour
Welcome to Lapland!

Arrive to Kiruna and transfer to the ICEHOTEL, your home for the next 3 nights. Every year when the winter comes, the pristine waters the meandering of Torne River slow down and freeze into ice. On one chilly day in 1989, the first ever Icehotel was hand-sculpted out of these massive ice blocks harvested from this very river running alongside. Today, over three decades later, the Icehotel has become a must-visit Swedish landmark for travelers from all parts of the globe.

Each winter since the first and the original Icehotel was built, passionate artists gather in the modest town of Jukkasjäarvi to build a new rendition of this Arctic wonder. When the spring comes, the hotel is then left to melt and find its way back to nature. Each coming winter brings a one-of-a-kind version of the Icehotel, promising a new set of treasured memories just waiting to unfold in this stunning Swedish destination.
Thankfully, whatever the season, there is an extraordinary experience awaiting anyone who visits. At ICEHOTEL 365, the newest addition to this Swedish landmark, anyone who wishes to go on an ice escapade can get to do so no matter the season. As the first permanent ice and snow hotel ever to be built, guests can now enjoy this unique Arctic adventure all year round. Have you ever imagined yourself sleeping in a room built out of ice? This and so much more are prepared for you in the massive 2100 square meter ice hall. Among the exciting attractions and activities that await are an art exhibit featuring hand-carved ice sculptures, a five-course menu highlighting Scandinavian delicacies, and the famous Ice Bar, which serves drinks in unique ice-carved glasses. Can a trip to the north get any cooler than this?
This evening we will meet for a brief welcome meeting and then a wonderful 3 course meal at the Icehotel Restaurant.

Ice Carving

After breakfast, Take the opportunity to create your own ice sculpture out of the pristine natural ice — something many artists dream of. The class starts with the instructor talking about your block of crystal–clear ice, harvested from Torne River, followed by an introduction on how to use the tools and the basics of ice sculpting.

This afternoon embark on a Wildlife and Nature Photo Safari. Photograph wild animals and beautiful landscapes during an afternoon outdoors. The tour begins at Icehotel where a photo guide from Scandinavian Photo Adventure picks you up. Together you take a minivan out in nature and start to familiarize yourself with the camera and practice taking pictures. When you feel comfortable with the camera you head out in search of exciting objects to photograph.
The Northernmost part of Sweden has eight seasons and you choose the photo object depending on weather and time of year. Nature is filled with Arctic animals like moose, reindeer, and birds, and your guide will help you capture them and the wonderful surroundings on camera. The tour ends with a cup of coffee or tea served by an open fire in the wilderness before returning to Icehotel.

Sami Experience

Enjoy breakfast at the ICEHOTEL and some free time. The ICEHOTEL has a great selection of optional tours available if you are looking for an option for this morning. This afternoon we will embark on a Sami and Reindeer experience.

For thousands of years, the Sámi people have lived in harmony with nature and their reindeer, constantly moving in search of food for the herd. After a short transfer from Icehotel, you encounter the Sámi culture at Nutti Sámi Siida, founded by the Sámi Nils Nutti.
Here you get to meet and feed the curious reindeer and learn more about the Sámi lifestyle and the indigenous people of the region. Try driving a reindeer sled around a fenced 200-meter track, a wooden sled, pulled by a reindeer – a real adrenaline-kick. You then gather around the fire in a traditional Sámi tent where you are served coffee and get to taste the Sámi signature dish suovas.

From 2016, they will be opening their doors all year round with the new concept ICEHOTEL 365, thanks to a new specially designed building run on solar power. It is certainly a unique experience, sleeping on reindeer skins inside the exquisitely carved ice rooms. Sleeping bags are included to ensure you are warm and snug during the night.
