Weather

The month of October in South Africa offers comfortable temperatures as high as 28°C (82°F) and daily average of 16°C (60°F) in cooler areas. It is the spring season in South Africa. This dry period is great for safaris and multi-region trips. Temperatures will be similar in Namibia, with it being warmer in the desert areas.

Currency

There are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work in Africa. Check with your bank prior to your departure.

South Africa:

The official currency of South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR). We recommend that you exchange money into South African Rands (ZAR) as other currencies are not widely accepted.

Visa cards are the most widely accepted cards. While ATMs are widely available, there are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work in Africa. Check with your bank prior to your departure.

Namibia:

The Namibian Dollar is the official currency and is fixed to and equals the South African Rand. These currencies can be used freely in Namibia, but the Namibian Dollar is not legal tender in South Africa.

ATM’s are widely available throughout the country for cash withdrawals. In addition, there are four main commercial banks in Namibia (Standard Bank, FNB, Nedbank and Bank Windhoek). These banks have foreign currency exchange facilities.

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are accepted. Please note, service stations do not accept credit for petrol.

General Sales Tax (GST) in Namibia is 15% on goods and services. Bonafide tourists to Namibia are exempt from paying sales duty or excise duty on luxury items. Visitors may reclaim VAT at Hosea Kutako International Airport, Eros Airport and Walvis Bay Airport. If you intend to claim the VAT back from your purchases, make sure you arrive a bit earlier at the airport as this takes some time to complete.

Electric Outlets

In South Africa there are four associated plug types, types C, D, M and N. Type C plugs have two round pins, type D and M plugs have three round pins in a triangular pattern and type N plugs have three round pins. South Africa operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

In Namibia there are two associated plug types, types D and M. Type D and M plugs both have three round pins in a triangular pattern. Namibia operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

A universal all-in-one travel adapter (can be purchased from retailers like Amazon) will allow you to plug in and charge most electronic devices. Most electronic devices have built-in converters. However, if you plan to use North American appliances like hair dryers, flat irons or curling irons you will need a converter.
