The currency in Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee (NRs). Each rupee is divided into 100 paisa (like cents and pence), although most transactions will be rounded up to a full rupee. It comes in a variety of notes and coins, ranging from NRs1 to NRs1000. Nepalese Rupees cannot be obtained outside of Nepal. Currency exchange and ATMs are available at Kathmandu International Airport. Passports are needed for currency exchange and it’s advised to keep the receipt.
The widest selection of ATMs is in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Most other towns in Nepal will also have ATMs, but they may not always be reliable or compatible with international cards. Some ATMs will have minimum withdrawal amounts and withdrawal fees are common.
Generally, cash is the most common form of payment in Nepal, but many hotels or more upmarket restaurants and shops will accept credit card payments.
