Entry Requirements

Visa

As of January 1, 2024, passengers travelling on a Canadian or U.S. passport, will no longer require an e-visa for travel to Kenya. Instead, they are required to apply and pay for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to their arrival to Kenya. The fee for the eTA is USD 34.09 per traveller, which includes the cost of the eTA and bank and processing fees. Before applying, please make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your departure date from Kenya. Please follow this link for more information and to apply for your Kenya eTA:

Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of expected departure and contain at least 2 blank pages.

Vaccinations
While no specific vaccinations are required, we recommend that your routine vaccinations are up to date and that you visit a local travel health clinic or doctor for advice prior to the trip.

Please note that proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is required if you are coming from a country where Yellow Fever occurs.

Contact with wild animals may occur during this tour. Therefore, an up-to-date (within the past 10 years) tetanus vaccination is recommended. Talk to your health care provider or visit a travel clinic to determine if, based on your risks, you should be vaccinated before travelling.

The Women's Travel Club recommends travelers to be fully vaccinated against COVID. Some countries will require COVID vaccination to enter, it is the traveler's resposibility to insure they meet all requirements.

Travel requirements may change at any time. Please visit your government's travel recommendations page.

Weather

The best time to visit Kenya is from June to October when there's virtually no rain and daytime temperatures are not too hot. In October, the average daily maximum is 25°C (77°F) and the average daily minimum is 16°C (61°F).

Currency

The official currency of Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES).

Visa cards are the most widely accepted cards. While ATMs are widely available urban areas they may not be available in remote areas. There are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work in Africa. Check with your bank prior to your departure.

Due to past problems with forgery, $US notes older than year 2006 are not accepted in Africa.

Large notes ($US 50, $US 100 etc) can be difficult to change in some places, but will gain you the best exchange rate.

Electric Outlets

In Kenya the associated plug type is G. Type G plugs have three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern. Kenya operates on a 240V supply voltage and 50Hz.

A universal all-in-one travel adapter (can be purchased from retailers like Amazon) will allow you to plug in and charge most electronic devices. Most electronic devices have built-in converters. However, if you plan to use North American appliances like hair dryers, flat irons or curling irons you will need a converter.
