Weather

April is a pleasant month with warm temperatures throughout Japan. The high average temperature can go up to 19°C (66°F) and the lowest averages 10°C (50°F) in the morning and at night. The average monthly rainfall is about 110 mm (4 inches).

Currency

The official currency in Japan is the yen. Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 yen and bank notes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen. Currency exchange counters are found at banks, post offices, some larger hotels and international airports.

Cash is still a very popular payment method in Japan particularly for transactions of small amounts. Credit and debit cards are now widely accepted, especially in big cities. Most hotels, department stores, mid to high end restaurants, outlet malls and large retail shops accept payment by credit card.

Many ATMs in Japan do not accept cards that are issued outside of Japan, so there are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work in Japan. Check with your bank prior to your departure. Note that many ATMs in Japan are out of service during the night and some are unavailable on weekends.

Electric Outlets

In Japan there are two associated plug types, types A and B. Type A plugs have two flat parallel pins and type B plugs have two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin. Japan operates on a 100V supply voltage and 50/60Hz.

A universal all-in-one travel adapter (can be purchased from retailers like Amazon) will allow you to plug in and charge most electronic devices. Most electronic devices have built-in converters. However, if you plan to use North American appliances like hair dryers, flat irons or curling irons you will need a converter.
